Of course you need a plan, who is doing what and why and criteria for the output is crucial. Its a guidance. But just like jazz-musicians need a basic melody in order to play around those notes. It takes a great effort, experience and exercise to be able to improvise. Flexibility, being alert and present in the moment is crucial.
